Cherub #2 – Mt. View Cemetery, Oakland, CA

Does it sound weird that one of my favorite places in the Bay Area to exercise was a cemetery? I loved hauling out my arsenal of cameras and walking around Mt. View Cemetery in Oakland, CA. I mean, who needs a weighted vest when I had a Nikon F2, Yashica Mat-124G, and a DSLR strapped to my body?

The weather was consistently pleasant—some of the nicest in the Bay Area. The inclines throughout the cemetery provided a good workout and, when it wasn’t shrouded in fog, the views of the Bay were amazing! And if you want a primer on the history of the San Francisco Bay Area, Mt. View is a great place to start!

When I wasn’t nerding out on history or pausing to take in the view of the Bay in the distance, it was the craftwork at the gravesites that caught my eye. I was especially obsessed with these cherub faces adorning a fountain. Over the years, I made several attempts at getting a shot of them that I liked. What a happy surprise to finally capture the image I love the most on my very last roll of Kodachrome! (R.I.P.)
